Over this past year, we’ve been working through the book of Matthew. We recently moved into the third discourse of Matthew’s Gospel, discussing Jesus’ Parables.

Each week, our small groups ministry (Community Groups) have been discussing the sermons and coinciding passages. Part of my pastoral role is to provide leadership over these groups; creating and distributing study questions from each message.

Parables Are Stories with Intent.

As an introduction to the parables, we begin with the understanding that Jesus uses fictional tales, that are culturally relevant to that time period. However, the intent of these stories is to provide important Kingdom truths that are applicable to any and every Believer.

Before working through the study questions, I suggest reading through the key passage, found in Matt. 13:1-9 & 18-23.

Study Questions: The Parable of the Sower

      1. What are your initial thoughts on the message or passage?
      2. What do you know about farming? What are good conditions for farming?
      3. When’s the last time you spread some Gospel seed? How did that person respond?
      4. In reference to the seed on the path, how have you witnessed unfruitful sowing through an unclear or confusing attempt at a Gospel message?
      5. In reference to the seed on the rocky ground, how have you witnessed unfruitful sowing through not connecting with other Believers?
      6. In reference to the seed in the thorns, how have you witnessed unfruitful sowing through lack of discipleship?
      7. In reference to the seed on the good soil, how have you witnessed fruitful soil through true evangelism and discipleship?
      8. After discussing the 4 types of soil, how so they impact your desire and/or methods for sharing the Gospel?
