What will it look like?

Within Western culture, I often wonder when the church will experience true suffering for Christ? Some would argue that the church suffered during the pandemic, with restrictions and lockdowns. It was a significant challenge, that’s for sure!

However, as I look at 1 Peter 4, the last half of this passage focuses specifically on suffering for being a Christian. Verse 12 in 1 Peter 4 reads as follows:

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering…“

I think we’d be very surprised!

In the Western world, we may be scoffed at for commitments we make surrounding Christ. Like not using bad language, or choosing not to over-consume food or alcohol. But that’s not really suffering though, is it?

We may also experience extra hoops to jump through during a state of emergency. (All of which can be painful!) And I’m, not saying we shouldn’t petition our governments when restrictions become too overwhelming. However, there are often other organizations that have to jump through hoops as well. Unless the government is singling out the church, the suffering is felt by everyone.

Not that I want to suffer in any way, shape, or form. And I don’t want the church to suffer! But at some point, the church in our modern society will finally be turned into something that is not accepted. Maybe even something that is disdained?

What will happen then?

How will we be impacted as individuals? How will our churches be impacted? Who will we remain firm in our faith when the suffering comes?

We witnessed a significant drop-off of committed Christians and church attendance during the pandemic. What will happen with the pressure is more severe and targeted?

I have been thinking about this a lot lately! Maybe the Western church would be spurred on spiritually if we do experience some true suffering? Maybe we’ll see thousands of people walk away? Time will tell…
