Why Those in Ministry Should Be Thankful Today
Reflecting on Our Blessings
With a thankful heart, I remember.
Today carries deep significance as I reflect on the privileges and freedoms I enjoy. For those of us in full-time ministry, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day should heighten our awareness of the liberties we live under. I am privileged to openly share the message of Jesus Christ without fear of persecution. Ministry thankfulness reminds me of the blessings I experience in my calling.
This privilege extends beyond just me. It reaches my spouse, my children, and my congregation. It assures that my calling can coexist with a fulfilling and secure career in ministry.
This liberty and privilege exist, in part, because of those who sacrificed their lives to uphold the freedom of religion as a core value of Western nations. I can preach, teach, and disciple freely because I live and serve in a free country.
If you or your spouse is called to full-time ministry, today should stir a deep sense of gratitude. As I reflect on my journey, here are three reasons why we should pause and be especially thankful today.
1. Ministry Thankfulness and Our Religious Freedom
The ability to proclaim Christ without government interference is a rare blessing. Throughout history and in many places today, believers have suffered persecution for their faith. Yet, I can share Christ-centered truth without fear. This freedom comes at a cost, one I recognize and honour on this day.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
2. Ministry Thankfulness and Our Family’s Security
My spouse and children have the assurance that when I engage in ministry, I will return home safely. In many parts of the world, that is not the case. Beyond physical safety, the generosity of my church family provides financial security. This allows my family to participate in ministry alongside me, living out the Gospel and sharing Biblical truth with those around us.
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.” (Psalm 18:2)
3. Ministry Thankfulness and the Human Cost
The abundant life I experience under God’s sovereignty is not without sacrifice. I am grateful for those who have served and given their lives to uphold the freedoms I cherish. As Canadians observe Remembrance Day and Americans mark Veterans Day, I pause to honour those who fought for the liberties that allow me to serve in ministry without restraint.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
Lest We Forget
Today is a time to reflect, honour, and give thanks. If you serve in ministry, take a moment to consider how these freedoms impact your calling. Ministry thankfulness is about pausing to appreciate the sacrifices that paved the way for our liberties and thanking God for them.
