Understanding the Power of Words – Small Group Study

A Small Group study from the Book of James.

In the book of James, we read about a small part of our body that has great power! This small part of our body has the strength to bring about achievement or destruction. What part do you think it is?

According to James 3:1-12 it’s our tongue! Even though our tongue is a small part of our body, it has the power to do amazing things or terrible things. The tongue has the power to do good or evil, depending on the heart of the person who wields the weapon!

Louder” Video

Tonight, we’re going to take a look at a music video by Dominic Balli titled “Louder“, to get a fresh perspective on what kind of power tongues really have!

They say sticks and stones can break your bones,
But words they never hurt.

Can turn a spark into a flame and then the fire burns,
But I’ve heard words that shatter souls.

They knock you down down.
They break you down down.

Them words but loudest can be heard.

All around the world you can feel it moving,
Shaking foundations waking up nations.

Listen to the sound you can hear it calling,
Don’t matter ’bout them sticks and stones, oh!

Love is louder, Love is louder.

You know a bitter tongue is a bullet slung,
It’ll shoot some people down.

And a gentle word though it’s seldom heard,
Can wipe away a frown.

They can lift your soul to the highest heights,
Or knock you down down.

They break you down down,
Them words but loudest can be heard.

La la la love , La la la love,
La la la love is louder.

La la la love, La la la love,
La la la love is loud.

Group Activity

1. Get a partner. (Once partners have been chosen, separate them into three groups partners.)

2. Start 10-minute rotations between communication hubs. (Call or Text, Greeting Card, Encouragement Note & Social Media.)

3. Each communication hub allows the student a different way to use words to show love to someone else.

Join the Conversation, Leave Your Thoughts
