Trusting God When Facing Ministry Disappointment

What Do You Do When Ministry Doesn’t Go as Planned?

Sometimes, ministry efforts don’t go as planned. The work doesn’t always produce the outcome we expected. Ministry disappointment can feel discouraging when results don’t align with our prayer requests and the hard work we’ve put in.

While serving in Alaska, I was given an opportunity to engage in a local middle school. I was offered a position in their mentorship program. But the way things ended left me disappointed and wrestling with God’s plan in it all.

Stepping into Brokenness

The students in the mentorship program weren’t just struggling academically; their struggles ran deeper. Many of them came from dysfunctional homes, carrying burdens no child should bear. Because I wasn’t their teacher or parent, I had a unique window into their lives. And I had an opportunity to speak encouragement and truth.

I’ll never forget my first meeting with the three junior high boys I was assigned to mentor. As we got to know each other, their stories unfolded. One boy, only 12 years old, described living in a trailer with his parents and older brother. Then with that added note that “they were gone for days at a time.”

This was concerning. I was processing his statement and formulating a follow-up. Then his friend chimed in: “And they don’t ever leave him any food!”

I soon learned that it wasn’t uncommon for him to eat mustard or ketchup sandwiches. Either on mouldy bread or saltine crackers. I was shocked and heartbroken. But then he perked up, “There’s a Chinese family a few trailers down. Sometimes they invite me over. Their food is awesome!”

His reality was heartbreaking, and it wasn’t an isolated story. The more I got to know these boys, the more my heart ached for them. I walked a fine line; listening to their pain, offering encouragement, and knowing when I had to report neglect. Despite the challenges, they trusted me, and I developed meaningful relationships with them.

When Ministry Doesn’t Meet Expectations

Because it was a public school setting, I couldn’t openly evangelize. And yet, I found ways to share biblical truth in practical ways.

I encouraged them with principles like “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31).

I also invited them to church youth events, hoping they would encounter Jesus.

To my joy, they started coming to the youth group from time to time. I thought this was it! This was the moment all my effort would lead to transformation! I was convinced at least one of them would accept Christ.

But it didn’t happen. The mentorship program ended, and their attendance in the youth group dwindled. Then my term in Alaska came to an end. As far as I know, none of them made a decision to follow Jesus.

That reality left me feeling disappointed. I had poured into them, prayed for them, and given them opportunities to hear the Gospel. And yet, I didn’t see the fruit I had hoped for. I had to remind myself that God calls me to be faithful, not to control the results.

Faithful in the Small Things

My role was to plant seeds. What happens next is in God’s hands.

Paul reminds us, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:6).

If you’ve ever faced a similar disappointment in ministry, you’re not alone. It’s easy to measure success by visible outcomes, but faithfulness isn’t about numbers. Remember that it’s about obedience.

Isaiah 55:11 reassures us, “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose.”

We may not always see the harvest, but God’s word never returns void. We serve, we love, we share the Gospel, and we trust God with the results.

Moving Forward in Trust Despite Ministry Disappointment

If you’re struggling with a ministry that didn’t end the way you had hoped, take heart. Our job is to be obedient. The results belong to God. Keep praying for those you’ve poured into. Trust that He is still at work in their lives, even if you don’t see it.
