The Important Difference Between the Words “If” and “When”
Consider a parent instructing a child.
A parent might say…
- “When you clean your room, remember to make your bed.”
- “When you brush your teeth, make sure to floss as well.”
- “When you eat your dinner, your vegetables are included.”
By stating “when” instead of “if” there’s an assumption that the first part of the instruction is happening or should happen. It becomes clear in how the statement is phrased, that the instruction isn’t optional.
Now let’s move to Jesus instructing us.
In the Gospels, we find a number of Jesus’ teachings where He begins His instruction with “when” (not “if”), which points us to assume that these are normative (and beneficial) practices for those who follow Him. Or perhaps better stated, as someone who believes in God and practices spiritual disciplines.
Here are a few examples from the Gospel of Matthew.
- “When you give to the needy, …… (followed by Jesus’ instruction)” (Mt. 6:2-3)
- “When you pray, …… (followed by Jesus’ instruction)” (Mt. 6:5-7)
- “When you fast, …… (followed by Jesus’ instruction)” (Mt. 6:17-18)
Interesting in all these teachings, the “hypocrites” are even practicing these things. Now granted, the instruction Jesus gives after the assumptive “when” clearly indicates our heart condition must be in the right place. (I.e Humility and self-sacrifice instead of pride and self-centredness.)
Nevertheless, no one questions whether the spiritual disciplines should or shouldn’t be happening.
It’s assumed.
I’m suggesting that Jesus is teaching us about spiritual disciplines that (matched with the right motives) can help us thrive in our faith. And His use of the word “when” instead of “if” tells us something about how we might walk more closely with God.
Jesus assumes that those who follow Him and live for God will be giving to the needy, praying, fasting, and an array of other spiritual disciplines that we often neglect. Then we wonder, “Why is my faith weak? Why am I spiritually drained?”
Looking into these assumptive phrases might provide the answers you’re looking for!
