THE FORCE AWAKENS…

…A New Generation of Star Wars Fans

This Christmas, the Star Wars saga continued into its 7th film.

All over the world, a multi-generational audience flocked to theatres. From elementary school kids, all the way up to grandparents; they all had to see it.

My first Star Wars film was actually the 2nd in the first trilogy, “The Empire Strikes Back“. My Dad who was already a fan after seeing “A New Hope“, took me in our station wagon to a drive-in theatre.

The Star Wars fanaticism started to take root and it never stopped. Even today, as a 36-year-old, I can’t help but to wander down the toy aisle to see what new product the Star Wars marketing team has come up with.

3rd Generation Fans

Yesterday, I took my two boys to see the newest edition, “The Force Awakens“. (Unfortunately, not to a drive-in.) They have already been well-established fanatics, reliving the 1st trilogy with me, then being born right after the 2 trilogy hit its prime.

They have the clothes, the toys, books, posters and more. They even like the Clone Wars cartoon movie (and series) that most 1st generation Star Wars fans can’t wrap their mind around.

They are the 3rd generations of Norton Star Wars fans.

A Great Story

For me, Star Wars shows us that a great story, of good triumphing over evil, can span any generation.

It reminds me of a quote from the book, “Epic” by John Eldridge:

For when we were born, we were born into the midst of a great story begun before the dawn of time. A story of adventure, of risk and loss, heroism . . . and betrayal. A story where good is warring against evil, danger lurks around every corner, and glorious deeds wait to be done. Think of all those stories you’ve ever loved―there’s a reason they stirred your heart. They’ve been trying to tell you about the true Epic ever since you were young.

There is a larger story. And you have a crucial role to play.

I believe John Eldridge is correct.

The Christian Story

As a Christian, I believe that all stories of good versus evil stem from the original and greatest story of good triumphing over evil; the Gospel of Jesus Christ, conquering death and sin.

And when the time comes, the final show-down, when Christ defeats the author of evil, Satan.
