Over the past couple of months, I’ve been studying, preaching on and posting from 1 Timothy. I hope you’ve enjoyed it and learned as much as I have.

Today, we move into Paul‘s second letter to Timothy. In the first 5 verses, Paul gives this introduction:

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Tim. 1:1-5)

Paul

Timothy

  • Stationed in the greater area of Ephesus (Southwest Turkey on the Aegean Coast).
  • Timothy is still overseeing the Ephesian Church (House Churches).

The Letter

  • Paul’s last Biblical writing before he’s beheaded under Nero’s order in 67 AD.
  • Chapter 4 gives hints that Paul knew his life could be taken at any moment.
  • Overtones of Paul’s love and appreciation for his pastoral apprentice throughout.
  • Paul is seemingly aware that persecution is escalating and will eventually spread to Timothy and the Ephesian church.
