Memorials That Honor Memory: What Should They Look Like?
In our modern time, many memorials have turned into large works of art or decorative displays. They often require a lot of time, money, and effort. However, memorials that honour memory should focus on the event and its meaning, not just the design.
Many people believe that making a memorial stand out will help it be remembered. This idea makes sense, but the size or complexity of a memorial shouldn’t overshadow its purpose. The goal is to help us remember, not just to impress.
Biblical Memorials: Simple Yet Powerful
One of the clearest examples of memorials that honour memory comes from the Bible. In Joshua 4, after God led the Israelites across the Jordan River, they set up stones as a memorial. This act was a simple yet powerful way to help the people remember what God had done.
The stones they used were likely heavy and difficult to move, but they were natural materials. These stones blended into the landscape, yet they served as a striking reminder of God’s faithfulness.
“When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord” (Joshua 4:6-7, ESV).
What Kind of Memorials Should We Build Today?
Think about the memorials we create today. If you wanted to honour something significant God has done in your life, what kind of memorial would you create? I believe memorials that honour memory should be heartfelt and meaningful, not necessarily elaborate.
God isn’t looking for memorials that take years to build or require expensive materials. He cares more about the heart behind the memorial than the monument itself. It’s the act of remembering and honouring God that matters most.
“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV).
Reflecting on Memorials That Honor Memory
We can learn from the biblical example of using simple stones. Memorials that honour memory don’t need to be grand. Their purpose is to cause us to pause and reflect on what God has done. The act of remembering is far more important than the size or complexity of the memorial.
