Levi the Poet Offers a Unique Expression of the Christmas Story
“Memories” by “Levi The Poet“
Now, before you immediately scroll down and watch the clip, try to read through the post first. I feel compelled to preface this video with a warning, that some content may deter some from getting the true heart of this young man’s gifting.
First Warning
Levi The Poet has a look that some may find shocking. Like many modern artists, a raw image seems to be the preferred fashion statement. This being said, Levi’s black dress, shaved head, bull-ring nose piercing and giant earplugs may turn some people away from giving this video a chance.
As a teenager who loved punk rock, I have had my share of odd fashion choices. Furthermore, after serving as a Youth Pastor for a number of years, I had seen quite a few raw looks and even I was somewhat taken aback by Levi’s overall image.
Second Warning
In reference to the first minute or two, after the video begins, Levi chooses to sing (not quite on key) the first few lyrics of his poem. This almost caused me to stop the clip, and it may have the same effect on you.
I assure you, once he moves into his dramatic spoken word, it increases in flow and clarity!
These two warnings aside…
I am convinced that you will soon be pulled into his unique story-telling ability. Somewhere around the three-minute mark, you may experience chills, as I did.
From there, I found myself filled with emotion as Levi linked the Nativity story with the story of the Cross, including John the Baptist’s role in the story.
As I reflect further, it almost seems as if Levi connects himself slightly with John’s role, as a strange man calling out that the Messiah is coming.
Final Thoughts
All in all, I don’t think anyone could not sit through this dramatic display without feeling some form of conviction to worship. Personally, Levi’s words have helped me concentrate on the connection between the Child that we celebrate, and the Savior to whom we owe our lives.
This being said, I am very interested in hearing how others respond to this intense, edgy poet. Watch the following vid and let me know in the comments below!
