Learning How to Navigate the Social Media Jungle

Do you remember MySpace?

Back in the day, MySpace was some strange time-waster for teens and college students. Then Facebook came along, almost single-handedly pushing MySpace out of existence. As well, as picking up a tonne of first-time social media users.

All of a sudden, we started to think very differently about this social networking thing. Facebook’s social contender Twitter came along. Then YouTube became the go-to site for social video, Instagram for photos, LinkedIn for career and business, Pinterest for DIY, and the list goes on.

All of these, of course, could be linked and shared with each other. But now, there are a host of other networks contending for top-spot on social usage.

Society seemed split on the hype.

Some embraced the new social systems and others stood firm that it was simply a fad that would quickly die out. Then all of a sudden, we couldn’t get away from those little Facebook thumb and Twitter bird icons!

They started appearing on everything from a coffee cup to ads in the newspaper. TV commercials and radio spots started promoting their social media pages more often than their own websites. Electronic devices went through major design changes to allow social media usage for people on the go.

Now with a wide variety of other up-and-coming networks, some are completely overwhelmed. Much like stock choices, diversifying your social networks can have great results.

However, it can be time-consuming.

That’s why many larger businesses and ministries hire social media experts to simply focus on web presence. Perhaps, you’re the owner/leader of a not-so-large business or ministry and you’re struggling to find a solid web presence.

Maybe you’ve made the initial steps, but still don’t understand how to maintain the presence you initially created. Maybe this whole post is driving you crazy because you don’t have any idea what I’ve been writing about.

Fear not, consider these two positives:

  1. Be encouraged that it’s doubtful MySpace will ever make a comeback.
  2. I want to help you succeed in this vast territory called social media.

At your convenience, drop me a message at jeremy@leadbiblically.com to set up a consultation for your church, small business or ministry. I’d be happy to get you started or help you get to the next level of online social interaction (and traction).
