Jesus’ Example of Outreach Inspires Us

His Compassion Guides Us

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of outreach, showing us how to serve others with love, compassion, and a heart focused on meeting their needs. His life on earth was a living demonstration of how impactful outreach can be, touching even the hardest hearts and opening them to His life-changing message.

Learning from Jesus’ Outreach to Others

As Matthew describes in his Gospel account, Jesus’ outreach was not passive but deeply proactive:

“And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’” (Matthew 9:35-38, ESV)

These verses highlight two essential aspects of Jesus’ outreach:

  1. A Heart of Compassion
Jesus didn’t just notice people’s struggles—He felt their pain and actively responded. This is a reminder that outreach should be motivated by genuine love and a heart that mirrors His compassion.
  2. An Invitation to Join His Mission
When Jesus speaks about the plentiful harvest but few workers, it’s a direct invitation for us to engage in His mission. He’s calling us to follow His outreach example and extend our hands to those in need.

Applying Jesus’ Outreach Example in Our Lives

Matthew notes that Jesus “went throughout all the cities and villages,” teaching, healing, and proclaiming the good news. This proactive approach teaches us to be intentional in our outreach efforts. It’s not about waiting for others to come to us but stepping out to meet them where they are.

Imagine the impact we could make if we modelled our lives on Jesus’ outreach efforts in our communities, churches, and everyday lives. There are countless opportunities to serve and show Christ’s love to those around us.

  1. Interesting the solution of Jesus to the problems of the people, was for the people of God to pray that He would send forth laborers. Not a solution that you and I would normailly think viable.

    1. Yes, I would have loved a greater explanation of what Jesus was actually feeling in that passage. Was He overwhelmed? Was He tired from a full day (maybe week) of doing ministry? Could He have snapped His fingers and righted all that He was witnessing? Of course! However, the passage seams to indicate far more going on in His mind, prior speaking of the Harvest.
