HOW TO WRITE A MISSION AND VISION THAT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A POLICY
Less is more.
When a business, church, or organization sets out to write a new mission or vision, too often it becomes a never-ending journey “and then…“
- “We do this….” (and then)
- “We are this…” (and then)
- “We value this…” (and then)
You get the picture.
Then they collaborate and word-smith a bit more, adding in connecting verbiage. Soon they have such a lengthy mission or vision statement, that it would seem they have written a governing policy for the organization. These statements become far from memorable.
Instead, others just get it. They create short, concise statements that target the heart of their movement or organization, without getting sidetracked by giving too much information. Soon enough, almost every employee, member and donor can recite that mission or vision; proof of its value!
A Biblical Example:
In Colossians 1, we find a mission statement of sorts. Paul outlines a lot of thoughts in the chapter, but verse 28 seems to encompass his mission and vision.
“We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.” (1:28)
This statement is focused on work (the what) yet with an eternal perspective (the why).
Write a Mission or Vision.
I realize that you may not be in a place to write or rewrite the mission or vision statement for your workplace or organization. If that’s the case, why not try to write a personal mission or vision?
Take some time to read through Colossians 1 and meditate on the mission and vision that Paul is laying out for the people of Colossae. Spend some time in prayerful reflection, then start writing. Try to write a single sentence, that encompasses who you are, what you care about and where you’re going.
If achieved, this statement can drive you toward a more fulfilling life. And perhaps, even your career? Your personal mission and vision can be lived out within the mission or vision your company or organization has already put before you.
