HOW TO SHARE YOUR FAITH WITH CONFIDENCE
So often we don’t know what to say.
That friend or coworker asks us, “What’d you do on the weekend?”
We list off the various events and activities that the weekend held as they pop into our minds. Then it gets to Sunday morning.
“Do I mention that I went to church?“
“Isn’t that a given? I’ve known them for a while. Surely they know by now that I go to church.“
It’s not really that we’re scared to tell them. Often it has to do with what they might ask after we tell them. What if they respond with,
“Oh, I didn’t know you were religious?“
That little comment accomplishes two things.
- It makes you feel guilty that this person has known you for a while, yet sees no connection between you and God.
- Set the stage for that awkward “I don’t have a religion, I have a relationship” moment that will almost guarantee you a spot at the office weird duck table.
Sharing our faith isn’t easy, is it?
Personally, I don’t think it’s supposed to be easy. If it were, why would Jesus say the following words to the disciples.
“…do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Mt. 10:19b-20)
If it were easy, why would they need the Holy Spirit? In John 14, we have the promise of our Advocate.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (14:26)
The Spirit Will Speak For Us
When the time comes to share our faith, the Holy Spirit is going to take over and bring back everything we’ve learned.
Suddenly, we’ll start remembering those devotional times with the Lord that we committed to. Or perhaps, a sermon or small group study will come back in full force?
You’ll be ready when the question comes:
“So what’d you do on the weekend?”
“Well, I went to church!”
And though you haven’t let on much that you care about Jesus in the past, this is a great way start! One conversation about the weekend can bring someone into the gates of heaven.
I think that’s well worth the convo!
