How To Find a Guiding Life-Verse
A single scripture can become a promise for life.
For many Christians, there can be a verse or passage that carries more importance or perhaps, becomes easier to memorize. This is because of its attachment to particular events in their life. Sometimes the Scripture is attached to the moment of their salvation or baptism.
It can also be a verse or passage that shows up numerous times throughout one’s life. Through a variety of circumstances, a piece of Scripture that God provides becomes an anchor used to solidify their faith. Any of these reasons solidifies it as what’s come to be known as a “life-verse“.
Philippians 1:6
Throughout my life, I have experienced numerous moments where God has used one sentence to provide immeasurable comfort as to where I’m going in life and/or whether or not my life will be significant for Christ.
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:6)
This verse has become such a part of me, that I had the reference tattooed across the top of my back. I understand not everyone in the Christian world is a fan of tattoos. However, this decision, interestingly enough, has brought me numerous opportunities to tell my story of coming to follow Christ, quote Philippians 1:6 and explain the passage.
The passage continues to guide me.
I’ve been working through some stuff lately. I have been asking myself a lot of questions regarding validation and purpose. It’s hard to know whether it’s a stress issue in which I need to relax, or is it more than that? Nevertheless, certain questions keep coming up.
- Are my gifts and abilities worth anything?
- Do I have a significant role in the body of Christ?
- Why do I not feel like I’m making a difference?
Perhaps you’ve asked similar questions before? Why do these thoughts consume sometimes? What is it about being centred in Christ, led by the Holy Spirit, and yet still struggling as fallen human beings, in a fallen world? We still wrestle with these questions of life and faith.
Our life-verse can guide us.
Our life-verse can once again, become that anchor in times of questions and doubt. Today, once again, I have been thrust into the awareness of how God specifically uses this verse in my life. This morning as I signed on to my Bible app, there it was on the home screen, right when I needed it. It’s at this point that God once again, reveals His promise to me through the letter to the Philippians.
It is so easy to let my mind get out of touch with God’s love for me and purpose for my life. As soon as that verse appeared in the app, I took a deep-heart dive into my questions, acknowledging the importance of the truths attached to my life-verse. As soon as I re-embrace this promise, it becomes perfectly clear.
Our life-verse can prepare us.
In this moment, I know that there is a new step of faith, a new challenge or opportunity. I can feel it and I’m aware of the further refining that is about to take place. I am about to enter this time of refinement set aside precisely for my growth and the betterment of Christ’s Kingdom.
My feelings of unknown purpose and validation are not worthless or meaningless. They’re a part of my faith journey. They are key pieces to renew and recenter me. These questions of faith are needed, so that God could once again, whisper to me, “Be confident“.
