How the Olympics Spark Thoughts of Eternity
The Olympics are more than just a global competition.
They offer a glimpse into something greater. They point to a unity that transcends nations, pointing to our heavenly citizenship.
Heavenly Citizenship and a Household Rivalry
For most, December marks the countdown to Christmas and the New Year. But another global event enters the mix every four years: the Winter Olympics. In our household, my wife eagerly anticipates the Games, especially the winter sports. Growing up in Alaska and competing in cross-country skiing, she’s more excited about the Olympics than the holidays.
The Olympics also bring a friendly rivalry into our home. My wife is American, and I’m Canadian, so we celebrate victories from both sides. Since my parents are British, I also keep an eye on how the UK is doing. But beyond the competition, there’s something about the Olympics that stirs deeper thoughts of eternity and our heavenly citizenship.
A Glimpse of Heaven’s Gathering and Heavenly Citizenship
Watching the opening and closing ceremonies, I often picture a glimpse of heaven. I see people from every nation, tribe, and language gathering together. It reminds me of the vision in Revelation 7:9:
“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.” (Revelation 7:9)
The unity of nations during the Games, even if temporary, gives a small reflection of the eternal unity. Some day we will experience a greater reality of this moment in the presence of Christ. Unlike national pride, which can easily drift into sinful pride, our ultimate identity as believers is found in Christ alone.
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)
This truth changes everything. When we recognize our heavenly citizenship, it shifts our focus from temporary allegiances to an eternal kingdom. The grandeur of an Olympic opening ceremony is nothing compared to the day when believers will stand before Christ. From every race and nation, we’ll stand united under the banner of Christ in perfect worship.
The Unity of Christ in the Church
In ministry, we encounter people from all walks of life. Some share cultural similarities with us, while others challenge our perspectives. But no matter where someone comes from, our focus must return to our shared citizenship in Christ. In the end, all national and cultural differences will fade. The only banner raised will be the name of Jesus.
Until that day, we have the opportunity to live out this unity now. Embracing one another in Christ, setting our minds on things above (Colossians 3:2). Anticipate the ultimate gathering where all believers will stand together in worship.
