HOW LEADERSHIP STATUS FALLS SHORT WHEN THE HOME IS NEGLECTED

What should leadership look like?

There have been many great leaders in days gone by. These leaders have served in positions with large organizations, be it corporate or non-profit.

But are they still great leaders is they neglect their servant leadership responsibilities at home?

Maybe not.

Every year, we hear a media release about some director, CEO or pastor who has had a moral failure. In turn, the family suffers terribly because the spouse and children never knew. They had no idea what was happening in the life of someone so close to them.

They never saw it coming.

These types of events clearly indicate that there must be a connection between leadership and the home that we’re missing.

Maybe leadership should begin at home?

In Joshua 24, Joshua gathers the people of Israel to renew their commitment to God’s Law. During his address, he speaks a phrase that has become a pillar statement for the Judeo-Christian world.

But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Much like the people of Israel so many years ago, we have a responsibility to make this pledge.

There are leaders all over this world with national and international status, bank accounts full of money and hundreds of thousands of followers on every major social network on the internet.

Nevertheless, on their death beds, all of these things fade away.

We need an eternal perspective.

When faced with the door to eternity, the impact they have left on their family carries far more weight than their legacy of fame and fortune. Even those who have spent their lives serving God as a career, wish they had of poured more of that service to God into their homes.

I’d encourage you this morning; read through Joshua 24.

Try to imagine this address being given to today’s corporate or ministry world. Imagine you’re in the crowd and you have to make a choice. Pull out your calendar and look over the next month, asking God to open your eyes to areas of imbalance.

What needs to change?

What specific times and activities can you plugin as permanent appointments? How can you bring a greater impact of servant-leadership into your home?

Let this next month, be the beginning of more strategic home-based service to the Lord.
