Exploring Labels and Our Identity In Christ – Small Group Study
Posted on February 12, 2012.
Wednesday night we host a discipleship program for students in 6th through 8th grade.
Introduction: Our theme tonight is Identity In Christ: Jesus Is Our Label. For you middle school students, I’m sure many of you are beginning to feel peer pressure in a major way. Specifically, many of you are beginning to be labelled into a certain category of the peer group (i.e. jock, prep, goth, geek, emo, etc.).
Our goal tonight is to challenge the concept that our labels are found on the outside. It doesn’t matter what label is on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that really matters! The labels that people give you at school, trying to make those your identity; also don’t really state who you are. Our label (or our identity) is found on the inside.
Ultimately, our label should be Jesus Christ.
Before we get into our small groups, I want to introduce you to a Christian artist named Jason Gray. He has produced an awesome music video titled “Remind Me Who I Am” which shows some of the labels that people receive as they walk through life. As the video concludes, Gray shows us what label really matters.
When I lose My way, And I forget my name,
Remind me who I am. In the mirror all I see,
Is who I don’t wanna be, Remind me who I am.
In the loneliest places, When I can’t remember what grace is.
Tell me once again who I am to you. Who I am to you.
Tell me lest I forget who I am to you.
That I belong to you. To you.
When my heart is like a stone, And I’m running far from home,
Remind me who I am. When I can’t receive your love,
Afraid I’ll never be enough, Remind me who I am.
If I’m your beloved, Can you help me believe it.
I’m the one you love, I’m the one you love,
That will be enough, I’m the one you love.
Tell me once again who I am to you. Who I am to you.
Tell me lest I forget who I am to you.
That I belong to you, To you.
Small Group Study:
- What initial thoughts and/or feelings came up as you watched this music video?
- Name some of the labels that you saw people holding. Did you agree with the labels that they were given? Which one and why?
- Do you feel like people label you? What labels do you feel like you have placed on you?
- Read Colossians 3:12. Do you read any labels within this verse? Who do these labels belong to?
- Do you believe that you carry the labels described in this passage? Why or why not?
- Read Colossians 3:13-17. What about the instruction that comes with having these labels found in verse 12? How are you doing at living out what has been placed upon you?
- Do you firmly believe that your identity (label) is found in Christ? How do you know for sure? How would you explain it to a friend who wanted to know?
