Embracing the Core Christian Principle of Sacrificial Love
Revisiting Sacrificial Love
Sacrificial love is foundational to the Christian faith, but are we truly willing to embrace it?
This morning, I spent some time updating two posts that focused on sacrificial love, particularly 1 John 3 and Francis Chan’s book “Crazy Love“. Both of these posts have very similar content but each with a slightly different perspective.
Understanding True Sacrificial Love
Sacrificial love is more than just a concept; it is a way of life that Jesus exemplified. The evidence is laid out for is in 1 John 3.
“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (1 John 3:16, ESV)
This kind of love requires us to go beyond our comfort zones, to give selflessly, and to put others’ needs before our own. It challenges us to act, not just in words, but in deeds and truth (1 John 3:18).
Embracing the Challenge
As Christians, we are called to reflect this selfless love in our daily lives. This might mean helping a neighbour in need, volunteering our time, or simply being there for someone who is struggling.
Francis Chan, in his book “Crazy Love,” urges believers to reconsider how they live out their faith, emphasizing that true love requires action and sacrifice. This echoes Jesus’ commandment in John 15.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13, ESV)
