Embracing the Challenge To Surrender Status – Small Group Study
From Francis Chan’s Surrender Series for teens and young adults.
Our high school ministry continued on with Francis Chan‘s Surrender series. We moved into week two of “Surrender Status“.
Introduction: Last week we introduced the concept of Surrendering our Status. Francis Chan encouraged us to give up our constant desire for popularity in the world’s eyes, in order to truly follow Christ. Today, we’re going to dive deeper into that concept.
Small Group Questions
- We heard from a student named Zach. What was his strategy for climbing the status ladder of popularity?
- What happened when the football player asked him to church? How did the football player use the popularity status that he had?
- Do you think the football player risked anything by inviting Zach to church? What if he had invited Emma (the girl nick-named “Cockroach” for living in a trailer)? Would he be risking more or less? Explain.
- What would happen to your status if you befriended someone like Emma? Would you be willing to invite her to church or youth group?
- Turn to Philippians 2. We’re going to work backwards from verse 11 over the next few questions. Read Phil. 2:9-11. How would you describe the feeling of these verses? How would you describe Jesus’ status at this point?
- Verse 9 begins with “Therefore”, and whenever we see that word, we need to ask “What’s it there for?” Read Phil. 2:6-8. What status does Jesus have at the beginning of verse 6? What did He do with that status?
- Read Phil. 2:3-5. Do you currently live out these verses? If you really lived and acted this way, what would it do to your status? What would it do to the status of others?
- Currently, how do you treat outcasts? Who will you befriend this week, purposefully putting your status on the line?
- What specific changes will you make this week to trade in status for servanthood? Who will hold you accountable for those changes?

- To reach an outcast, how difficult would it be to surrender your status?
do you have the material for surrender…if you have the handouts and leaders guide to teach it will be awesome…the reason why I’m asking cause we don’t have the funds to buy the series…but it would be extremely thankful for the material…i know my youth group would appreciate
I do not have the materials. However, it’s a pretty easy (and reasonably priced) purchase online. Obviously, I highly suggest it for any youth program!
