Could Jesus be considered a Superhero?

Some time ago, I wrote a post titled “Discussing God With A 3-Year Old, Brings Supernatural Thoughts“. The post was about my son’s perspective on God as a superhero. The other morning, for some reason, my mind wandered down that road once again.

It all started by pondering the magnitude of Jesus’ power and authority while He walked this earth. Then, for whatever reason, I started to ask myself whether or not Jesus could fly.

I know, a little crazy, but bear with me.

Flying and defying gravity seem to be one of the most important super-hero attributes. I couldn’t think of any scriptural evidence for Jesus flying. Perhaps you’re saying to yourself, “He did fly as He ascended to heaven!” But I feel like that doesn’t really count.

I’m sure if Jesus wanted to, He could have genuinely flown from place to place like a comic book superhero, but why didn’t He?

I think the answer is based on His purpose.

Although all superheroes’ purpose is to do good and triumph over evil, most superheroes have to be deceptive about it. Superheroes have to have an alternate identity to cover their superpowers. Having an alternate identity, though for good reason, is still deceptive.

Jesus was about truth as a major component of His purpose for coming to earth and taking on human form. This is kind of like hiding His powers..but it still makes for a difficult comparison.

I believe He’s a Super Hero.

Jesus is the real-life superhero in my opinion. He had to save His power for certain occasions, thinking through each scenario for a specific impact on both participants and onlookers. As His ministry progressed, the more time someone spent with Jesus and the closer someone got to Jesus, the more superpower was revealed.

Eventually, those who were closest to Jesus saw His greatest moment of power. The disciples saw amazing miracles, seeing Him alive after He was dead and buried, witnessing Him walk through walls, then watching as He ascended (flew) to heaven!

Jesus was the first and only true Super Hero.
