Connecting with God and the Subtle Disconnection of Comfort

When Life Feels Too Comfortable

Does comfort gradually pull you away from connecting with God? For me, I’ve always been a morning person. I love the stillness before anyone else in the house is awake. This quiet time has been vital in maintaining consistency in my devotionals with the Lord.

However, despite rarely missing my time in the Word, I often struggle with prayer. Interestingly, this struggle disappears when life becomes chaotic or when trials hit our family or the ministries I oversee. Why is that? Why can’t I fully engage with the Spirit when times are good? Why does my mind wander to the strangest places when it’s at rest? Why can’t I focus and fully connect with God when life is easy?

Connecting with God in the Struggles: Lessons from Rachel, Leah, and Donald Miller

In my journey of questions, I have found some insight within the biblical account of Rachel and Leah and a few words from the author Donald Miller.

Genesis 31 shows how Rachel and Leah’s lives were filled with struggle and longing. Yet, these challenges led them to depend on God.

“Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, ‘Is there any portion or inheritance left to us in our father’s house? Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has indeed devoured our money. All the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. Now then, whatever God has said to you, do.’”(Genesis 31:14-16, ESV)

Similarly, in his book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, Donald Miller shares how our stories are shaped more deeply by struggles than by comfort. It’s in these difficult times that we are often drawn closer to God, realizing our need for His presence and guidance.

Don’t Wait Until Times Are Tough to Connect with God

When times are good, it’s easy to drift. But why wait until life gets tough? Jesus calls us to follow Him now, in both the highs and the lows of life.

Comfort can create a false sense of security, leading us to disconnect from the One who sustains us. The Book of Acts is full of stories of believers who didn’t wait for hardship to seek God—they pursued Him with passion and purpose in every season of life.

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47, ESV)

So, why not choose to follow Him now, before life gets chaotic again? Let’s learn to depend on God not only in trials but in comfort as well. Connecting with God should be our priority in every season.
