CONNECTING TO CHRIST
Communicating With Our Saviour: Part 1
Today, we started a new preaching series titled, “Communication Inside & Outside the Church”. If you’re interested, feel free to listen or download messages at whbc.ca/sermons.
Here at LeadBiblically.com, I’ll be writing a series of blog posts, also exploring this topic of communication. The Bible is full of passages that highlight communication. We’re going to unpack some of those together.
Over the next 3 weeks, I hope to cover (1) Communicating with Our Saviour, (2) Communicating with Our Church and (3) Communicating with Our World.
John 10:22-30
“Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews who were there gathered round him, saying, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered, ‘I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.’“
There is a lot packed into this paragraph of Scripture, but this week I plan to focus on a single verse. In John 10:27 Jesus states, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Connectivity
The first and most important piece to Communication With Our Saviour is to be connected to Him. We will not be able to communicate with the Saviour unless we are connected to Him.
Jesus highlights this in the first 5 words of this verse: “My sheep listen to my voice…” And it’s no mistake that Jesus uses the metaphor of sheep.
When a sheep is born into a flock, it hears all the regular noises that sheep make. But every so often, it hears a noise that sounds very different from the baaing and bleating of sheep. And that young sheep soon discovers the human connected to that strange noise.
The Shepherd’s Voice
That strange noise is the shepherd’s voice. Sheep may not be the smartest animals in the world, but they grow to know their shepherd’s voice. And that young sheep soon learns that though the voice is not constant, the shepherd’s presence is.
Depending on the ownership of the land, the season and weather conditions, pastureland may be sparse. Some shepherds and their flocks are forced to share the same plots of land.
As flocks travel from one place to another for food and water or in times of confusion and danger, that shepherd’s voice connects that young sheep to its flock.
How to Get Connected
The metaphor here is that we are sheep. Jesus is the Shepherd. Our connectivity is based on the voice of the Shepherd. Our connectivity is based on the voice of Jesus Christ.
You might be thinking, “Well I don’t feel connected to Jesus.” Maybe you haven’t heard His voice? Or you’ve heard his voice but you’ve decided to wander away from the flock. Or perhaps, you’ve decided to ignore His voice altogether and have chosen your own path.
If you’re not hearing or you’re not listening to the Shepherd’s voice, that means you are not connected to Him. You must listen to His voice and respond to have connectivity with the Shepherd, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Communication with your Saviour can only happen, once you have acknowledge Him as your Saviour.
