Answering the Question, “Who Am I?” – Small Group Study

Based on Francis Chan‘s Surrender Series for teens and young adults.

Introduction:

Over the past couple of weeks in our Surrender series, we’ve looked at what it would mean to “Surrender Stuff“. Specifically, we’ve explored the tough truth that many of us are “Possessed” by our possessions. This week, Francis Chan is going to move us into the theme of “Surrender Status“.

As you enter adulthood, you wander in and out of situations where popularity rules which social class you fit into. It’s difficult to be comfortable with who you are, yet navigate who to hang out with. Also, to decide what you may need to do or say to fit into a certain group or status. Today, we’ll try to answer the question, “Who Am I?

Small Groups:

  1. Do you have distinguished groups of people in your school (i.e. jocks, brains, partiers, etc.) or do they kind of blend together?
  2. Do certain groups have more status than others? Do people respect those who are smart, rich, athletic, etc.?
  3. Is there a way to get more status if you don’t have it? Can you climb the ladder of popularity?
  4. We just heard a story from a student named Heather. What kind of status did she have, what happened and how did she handle it?
  5. If Heather was your friend and you could sit down and talk with her, what would you say?
  6. Read John 15:18-20. How does this passage speak to you personally? Is it convicting? Why or why not?
  7. After reading this passage, Francis says “You really can’t follow God and fit in.” Do you believe this? If so, how have you applied it to your life?
  8. Describe you’re the status you have in school, church and community. Are they different? Are YOU different? Why or why not?
  9. Currently, are you doing something to improve your status? If so, what? Are you paying special attention to people who have more status?  If so, why?
