CONNECTING SHEPHERDS WITH GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY
3 Key Passages That Connect Shepherds with Good News of Great Joy
Today, churches all over the world celebrated the Advent theme of Joy.
The Good News of Great Joy has typically been connected with the shepherds, who were visited by a host of angels. In the advent wreath, the 3rd candle (pink in colour) is considered the Shepherd’s Candle, again representing joy.
As we study the New Testament, there are a few connections between joy and shepherds.
- First, from Luke 2:8-14 and in reference to today’s Advent, the great joy that came to the shepherds, after receiving the good news, that the Messiah had finally arrived, and that they would be included in the account of His birth.
- Second, from John 10:14-16, the great joy that comes to the Believer, after accepting the good news, and now belonging to the Good Shepherd.
- Lastly, from Luke 15:4-7, the great joy that comes to the church, after receiving the good news, that a lost sheep has been found, and brought into the Good Shepherd’s flock.
We’ll be exploring all 3 connections this month!
